The world famous Wartburg Castle is over 900 years old. It towers above the city of Eisenach and is visible from far and wide. Legend has it that Louis the Leaper announced the founding of Wartburg Castle with the words ‘Wart! Berg, du sollst mir eine Burg werden!’ – ‘Wait! Mountain, thou shalt bear me a castle!‘

The Wartburg is far more than just a castle; it is a witness of German history. It tells the story of the courtly art of the Middle Ages, St Elizabeth lived and worked here and it was here where Martin Luther translated the New Testament. The Reformer’s authentic living and working quarters, where he stayed from May 1521 until March 1522, have been a pilgrimage destination for centuries and may also be classed as the birthplace of the Lutheran Bible and the modern German language. The Fest der deutschen Burschenschaften (German Student Fraternities' Festival) was held at Wartburg Castle and it was also here where Wagner wrote his romantic opera ‘Tannhäuser’. All of this still contributes to the castle’s attraction and charm.

The ‘Jägerzimmer’ (Hunting Room) is the official branch office of Eisenach registry office. It is located on the first floor of the Romantik Hotel ‘Auf der Wartburg’. The ‘Hubertus’ murals were created in the 1920s by the Weimar-based artist Kurt Roquette and give the room its name.

Tip: The traditional 20-minute donkey ride up to the castle is a great treat for kids. The donkey stables operate in the summer months when the weather is fine.

Since 1999, Wartburg Castle has been recognised as ‘an outstanding monument of the feudal period in central Europe’ by UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
