Christmas market tour in Eisenach - Thuringian Forest

After the first warm drink and the first snack we start the tour from the market to the Predigerkirche. Here begins the Luther experience trail Luthererlebnispfad, which leads over the Eisenacher Schlossberg past the donkey station up to the Wartburg. The steep but very interesting ascent informs about the reformer on 15 large panels and takes a look at important historical events during Luther's lifetime. At the end of the adventure trail is the donkey station which is closed during the cold season so that you have to climb the last meters to the Wartburg on your own.

Before you go over the drawbridge into the castle courtyard, you should make a small detour to the right to the Wartburg hill. From there you have a great view of the eastern facade of the Wartburg, which is also one of the most popular photo motifs in Eisenach.

The Wartburg itself was declared a "World Heritage Site of Humanity" by UNESCO in 1999 because of its outstanding cultural and historical significance. The entrance to Wartburg Castle costs a road toll of 5 euros on Advent weekends. In return, the Wartburg's large ballroom and the famous Luther Room are open to you for viewing. You should not miss this in any case. Afterwards you can enjoy the romantic atmosphere within the old walls by torchlight.After your stay at Wartburg Castle, the descent begins past the Elisabethplan, an unofficial place of pilgrimage (Rose Miracle), through the Helltal valley past the Reuter-Wagner-Museum, which houses the largest Wagner collection outside of Bayreuth. From the museum it is only about 15 minutes on foot to the starting point of the tour at the market. On the way back you will pass the Bachhaus and the Luther House. Both houses house modern and very worth seeing exhibitions. The Christmas market tour ends at the starting point, the market.

The historic Christmas market at Wartburg Castle is only open on Advent weekends from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Christmas market on the market square is open daily until 22.12.2019 - Monday to Saturday from 10.30 am and on Sundays from 11.30 am.
