Hiking - Rennsteig - Stage 5 - From Allzunah to Friedrichshöhe
You start this stage in the middle of the forest in the small village of Allzunah not far from Frauenwald. Along the road you will soon reach the quarry at Großer Hundskopf and continue east to Großer Dreiherrenstein. The Waldbaude is not only directly on the Nature Park Route and attracts all active people from near and far. Fresh beer and classic Thuringian cuisine make for a great place to rest.
A few metres further on, you reach the exact centre of the Rennsteig. Continue through the dense mixed forests to Neustadt am Rensteig (not to be confused with Neuhaus am Rennweg). Here you will find the Rennsteigmuseum. At Gasthof Hubertus or the restaurant and Hotel Kammweg you can enjoy yourself around lunchtime.
Always heading south, the Rennsteig follows the foothills of the Thuringian Forest past Kahlert and Altenfeld to Hoher Stock. Shortly after the Schwalbenhauptwiese, you reach the Triniusbaude. This small, rustic inn is located directly on the edge of the forest and offers welcome refreshments. Afterwards, the trail climbs again to the 830m high "Erste Berg". Now the climatic health resort of Masserberg is not far away. On the mountain plateau you pass the top station of the ski lift. Shortly before entering the village, you will see the Prince Karl Guenther Monument in the distance on your left. You can reach Masserberg directly at the large hikers' car park with the Rennsteighaus. In the village there are numerous places to stop for refreshments Particularly worth mentioning are the Gasthof "Zum Breitenborn" and the Hotel Haus Oberland.
After a short stop, we continue towards the Rennsteigwarte on the Eselsberg. In good weather, the 33m-high tower offers a fantastic view over the Thuringian Forest and as far south as Veste Coburg. The Turmbaude is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm.
You will soon reach the Eisfelder Ausspanne via the small Sauberg mountain. Directly to the east on the mountainside is the lower basin of the Pumpspeicherwerk Goldisthal. It is the largest hydroelectric power station in Germany. Passing the monument in honour of Bruno von Germar, you will soon reach Friedrichshöhe. The Gasthaus & Pension "Zum Rennsteig", the Gaststätte & Pension "Hirschblick" or the Pension "Arnika".
