Hiking - Rennsteig - Stage 7 - From Spechtsbrunn to Brennersgrün
Take a detour to Bavaria through the idyllic Schiefergebirge mountains.
You start this stage in Spechtsbrunn and follow the Rennsteig through the forest to the Kalten Küche. At this former border point of a major trade route to Nuremberg, you will now find the Nature Park information centre and a small snack bar. Continue straight on through the dense forest and across mountain meadows to the Frankenwaldhütte, ideal for a first rest. Afterwards, the original course of the Rennsteig follows the road steadily downhill to Steinbach am Wald. The approximately 6 km long road section can also be hiked along a alternative route close to nature.
At the entrance to the village, the futuristic glass obelisk is visible from afar, especially in the evening hours, due to its artistic lighting.
At about halfway, the Hotel and Restaurant "Rennsteig" invites you to a midday snack at the weekend. Past the Rennsteigpark, the well-known hiking trail follows the road until after the roundabout at the old brickworks and then turns right again into the dense woods. On the last few kilometres to the deserted Brennersgrün, the Rennsteig follows the former inner-German border past the Loquitzquelle spring.
